FRENCH - LANGUAGE A2

(Standard level and Higher level)

Both Standard and Higher levels will study the same topics but will be assessed according to different criteria.

Term 1

Literary Text Option: Gustave Flaubert            Madame Bovary

Several essays to produce about this literary text.

Students start building up their personal dossier of work and material.
Topic Option: Language/Culture:   
bilingualism
linguistic minorities  
linguistic imperialism  
nationalism 
translation

Preparation of First Internal assessment activity based on this option (oral component)

Study of newspapers, magazines (including articles, editorials), comic strips, documentaries…
Grammar.
Techniques to analyse a literary text, how to read a text.
Development of an appropriate critical vocabulary for discussion of style and ideas.

(These two last tasks will be tackled during the two-year course as well).

Definition of the First structured piece of writing (must be handed in when we resume school after half term in February.

Term 2

Literary Text Option: Marivaux        Le Jeu de l'Amour et du Hasard

Several essays to be produced about this literary text.

First Internal assessment activity based on the Topic Option: language/culture.
Topic Option: society:
Expression and suppression prejudice in all its forms (racial, ethnic, gender discrimination)
The impact of economic change on societies  
Problems of social deprivation (for example, drugs, violence,…)

Preparation for Second Internal assessment activity based on this option (oral component)
Study of magazines, articles, reports, advertisements, business letters…
Grammar.
Study of comparative commentary techniques.
The students work on their second piece of structured piece of writing and will have to hand in it in June.

Term 3

Literary Text Option: Marivaux        Le Jeu de l'Amour et du Hasard

Several essays to be produced about this literary text  (should be finished by the end of this term)

Topic Option: society:
Expression and suppression of prejudice in all in its forms (racial, ethnic, gender, discrimination)
The impact of economic change on societies  
Problems of social deprivation (for example, drugs, violence,…)  

Completion of Second Internal assessment activity based on this option (oral component)  

Study/use of plays, extracts from novels, biographies…
Grammar
 More work on comparative commentary techniques.  
Second structured piece of writing handed in in June;
