Reading :
You should read widely, read fiction and non-fiction texts
(novels and journalism).
Tips for making your
reading active rather than passive:
Fiction
 | Note
down the progression of the novel, write down what happens in each chapter. |
 | Note
down examples of how the writer creates atmosphere (for example look at the
descriptions of place and weather) |
 | Note
down how the descriptions of characters make them either positive or
negative characters, ask yourself why you like or dislike a certain
character, what makes the character good or evil. |
Non-fiction
 | When
reading a magazine or newspaper article try and work out the progression of
the writers argument, what are they saying and in what order. |
 | Identify
the key sentence (the most important sentence) in each paragraph. |
 | Try
to write a letter responding to the article, if you find it interesting or
if you disagree with the article say why in your letter. |
