You should read widely, read fiction and non-fiction texts (novels and journalism).

 

Tips for making your reading active rather than passive:

Fiction

Note down the progression of the novel, write down what happens in each chapter.
Note down examples of how the writer creates atmosphere (for example look at the descriptions of place and weather)
Note down how the descriptions of characters make them either positive or negative characters, ask yourself why you like or dislike a certain character, what makes the character good or evil.

Non-fiction

When reading a magazine or newspaper article try and work out the progression of the writers argument, what are they saying and in what order.
Identify the key sentence (the most important sentence) in each paragraph.
Try to write a letter responding to the article, if you find it interesting or if you disagree with the article say why in your letter.
