Chapter 1 – Harvey, Half-Devoured.

  1. Explain what the title of the chapter means: “ Harvey, half-devoured”.
  2. From whose point of view do we see events? How is this done? Give examples.
  3. How would you describe Harvey’s character, judging from the opening of the book down to “Harvey Swick was eaten by the great grey beast February”.
  4. Give synonyms for dwindled, dire and dreary, sharp and sweet, marshalling his excuses, blazing, flooding and lavish.
  5. What is the name of the stranger in Harvey’s room?
  6. How did he get in to Harvey’s room?
  7. Describe the stranger in your own words.

Chapter 2 – The Hidden Way

  1. Write a diary entry for Harvey covering the time from just after Rictus’ first visit and his next visit.
  2. Describe how Harvey gets to the “Holiday House”.
  3. How does he feel when he arrives there? Why?

Chapter 3 – Pleasure and the Worm

  1. Who is first person that Harvey meets at the house?
  2. Describe her in your own words.
  3. Who are the next two people that Harvey meets? Describe them.
  4. What information do we find out about Rictus?
  5. What do you make of the phone call Harvey makes to his parents? Does his mother sound like she did in the first chapter?
  6. What sort of guests do they have in the Holiday House?
  7. Who built the Holiday House? How does Mrs Griffin react when he is mentioned (find a quotation and explain what it shows about how she feels).

 

Chapter 4 – A Death Between Seasons

  1. What has happened to the trees when Harvey wakes up?
  2. Describe clue cat? Does his appearance have any significance? 
  3. What happens to clue cat in the end? Is this significant?
  4. Why does Mrs Griffin say "we all have somebody watching over us" and later "No more questions from you"?
  5. Who are the other children at the Holiday House? What do you know about them?
  6. What do we learn about the lake? How does Mrs Griffin behave/sound when she talks about the lake?

Chapter 6 – Seen and Unseen

  1. What characters do Harvey and Wendell decide to be for Halloween? What is Mrs Griffin’s reaction?
  2. What character would you choose to be for Halloween? Explain why.
  3. ‘Whatever I come in here wanting to find, I find it sooner or later.’ Why do you think this happens?
