Activity One Explore a range of travel writing (websites, books, newspaper articles etc.) and chose 2 texts which you think are effective and interesting. Try to chose 2 contrasting pieces (eg a book by a well known travel writer and a more informal website entry) Answer these questions and fill in the table

See to what extent the personality of the write emerges in the writing. Is this a good or bad thing?
You should write 2 or 3 paragraphs and give specific details to back up you comments

After working through these texts, write a travel article on a place you know well

Before you begin, decide on your audience and purpose.
Are you recording events in an objective way or setting out to entertain?
Be clear about your attitude to the place you wish to describe and the people who live there.Think about the tone you wish to adopt and the techniques you will employ
Remember to employ facts and use details to create a general picture.
Try to show rather than tell
