Language Analysis Question

-         Question 2 on the exam paper

-         Worth 10 marks (less than the other 2 questions which are worth 20 each)

-         You are asked to focus on the language of one passage only

What do you have to do?

  1. The easy bit: Select words and phrases (give quotations)
  1. The difficult bit which will give you a good grade: Comment on the EFFECTS of language: “high quality comments that add meanings and associations”, “wide              ranging discussion”, demonstration of “writer’s reasons” for using particular words and phrases. “May group choices of words to identify writer’s objectives”.

Follow the 3 steps for each word/phrase or group of words/phrases:

 Make a POINT ą

‚  Give a QUOTATION or CLUSTER OF QUOTATIONS ą

ƒ  Write about the EFFECTS of language

 for example

How does the writer convey the attractions of traditional eating establishments in Beirut?”

One way in which the writer shows the attractions of traditional eating establishments in Beirut is by using the metaphor, ‚ “king of the coast” to describe the restaurant Nasr. ƒ The word “king” suggests importance and an ability to command respect. A sense of Nasr being special and superior in a regal way is also implied in comparison to the characterless and common “fast food chain” which takes its place.

You should write more for your analysis of effects than for your initial point and the quotation/s.

To achieve 10 marks you need to make a wide range of points, all supported by quotations and analysis. Do keep track of the time. Don’t write pages in response to this question and end up with no time for the final question of the exam, the summary, which is worth 20 marks.
