ASSESSMENT POLICY

Purpose

Marking of pupils' work allows teachers and pupils to monitor progress.

To be effective, it needs to be delivered in a way that pupils will understand and be able to act upon it

It should enable students to take charge of their own learning by setting targets for improvement

Where possible it should motivate pupils to further effort by praising current achievements.

It should provide the teacher with feedback on how well pupils have understood the current work and enable him/her to plan the next stage of teaching and learning.

It should enable the teacher to make judgements about individual pupil attainments, particularly with regard to teacher assessment levels within the GCSE & IB

Procedure

Students should be encouraged to be self-critical and to check their work thoroughly before they hand it in.

Where drafting coursework, students must highlight clearly changes that they have made

Teachers’ Marking should take the form of a comment which covers all the relevant areas dealt with by the task, a target for the pupil and a grade/mark. A balance of positive and negative comments should be aimed for, especially with pupils who need help in a variety of areas. A red pen should be used when marking work

Work should be collected in regularly and returned as quickly as is practicable.

Responses should wherever possible be constructive, acknowledging what has been achieved as well as highlighting areas for improvement.

Correcting every mistake can be disheartening, so it is often be better to focus on particular aspects of the work at different times. Pupils will need to be aware what aspects are being made a focus.

Normally, only a limited number of errors should be noted e.g. no more than 4 or 5 spellings unless a point about carelessness/drafting is being made or spelling was a specified target area

A specific comment on learning needs to be made at the end of a piece of work. The aim should be to summarise achievement and to set a further target.

Students should be supplied with the Assessment criteria for KS3, GCSE 1 IB as appropriate

When indicating errors in Standard English all staff should adopt the following standard symbols
