There are 2 parts to your IGCSE English Literature Programme: Examination & Coursework

The examination is worth 70%, Coursework 30%

The examination

For the examination, you will study 3 texts & answer one question on each. There are 3 questions to choose from for each text. One of the questions will be passage-based, one an essay & one an empathetic response (except for poetry which has 2 essays and one passage-based question).

You MUST answer AT LEAST one passage-based question

You will bring the exam texts into the examination room but they must NOT contain any annotation, underlining or highlighting

The 3 exam texts:

Genre

Class Text

A selection of poetry

A prose text

A work of drama

You will be tested on the following:

How well you know the texts
Your personal response
How well you understand the texts, shown by how you write about themes, characters, relationships etc
How well you can analyse style & technique

Coursework

You must produce 2 pieces each of about 600-800 words

Each must be on a different text, although one may be on a Paper 1 text

The essays do NOT have to be on different genres

If writing on poetry or short stories, you need to refer to at least 2 poems or stories though you do not need to compare them.

One assignment may be used for both English Language & English Literature although the assessment will be different for each folder
