Excellent or very good understanding of the way writers convey meaning
Good understanding of overall meaning
Good understanding of textual details and the effects of language (if required by the question)
Demonstration of inferential and evaluative skills
Different levels of meaning understood and significant themes recognised
Specific question requirements understood and relevant information selected, organised and when appropriate summarised
Relevant personal and critical interpretation of meaning may be given

Sound understanding of overall meaning
Sound understanding of some textual details and some understanding of effects of language

Some demonstration of inferential and evaluative skills
Understanding of more than one level of meaning may be demonstrated and some themes recognised
