Internal Assessment Criteria for Reading Skills

	Excellent or very good understanding of the way writers convey meaning
	Good understanding of overall meaning
	Good understanding of textual details and the effects of language (if required by the question)
	Demonstration of inferential and evaluative skills
	Different levels of meaning understood and significant themes recognised
	Specific question requirements understood and relevant information selected, organised and when appropriate summarised
	Relevant personal and critical interpretation of meaning may be given

	Good understanding of meaning in text
	Sound understanding of overall meaning

Sound understanding of some textual details and some understanding of effects of language (if required by the question)

Some demonstration of inferential and evaluative skills

	Understanding of more than one level of meaning may be demonstrated and some themes recognised
	Specific question requirements understood and relevant information usually selected, organised and when appropriate summarised

Some personal opinion and interpretation of meaning may be given

	Understanding of meaning in text demonstrated
	Understanding of overall meaning and ability to recognise most important points in text

Some understanding of textual details, understanding of effects of language (if required by the question) may be limited

	Some limited demonstration of inferential and evaluative skills
	Beginning to understand more than one level of meaning and themes

	Specific requirements of most questions understood and some relevant information usually selected and organised
	Some relevant personal response may be given

	Limited understanding of meaning in text
	Some limited understanding of overall meaning, but only one level of meaning recognised
